Does mono cause weight loss
My daughter is 10 and has had mono for 4 months and almost every complication. I am so scared because I have diabetes and I know what it can do. (Vertigo, seizures, fainting, blood sugar issues etc) but none of the typical cold symptoms. She had a bad rash and has gained about 17 pounds in ONE month with no change of diet to get her that way. Symptoms include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat and sometimes a swollen spleen. Weight gain is not a symptom of Mononucleosis, or EBV. I just wish I knew how to talk to her and her parents and get them to listen without them thinking I am imposing or think they are stupid or something. The symptoms of mono can ease after a few weeks, but it could take several months before you feel completely normal. I want her to see and endocrinologist, a family doctor is not good enough for diabetes. Although children are more at risk than adults, what can you do to avoid getting sick from mono. Loss of appetite is one of the main symptoms of mono. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature from Temple University. Nausea and diarrhea, both of which can cause weight loss, are some distinguishing features of mono. Her weight has gone up as well and my Dr thinks its because mono can effect the pancreas thus causing problems with blood sugar. I told her she should switch doctors but they did not. She also is having a problem with insulin resistance and the doctor said she will eventually have to take insulin shots (be fully diabetic). An enlarged spleen, a symptom in some mono cases, can cause discomfort or a feeling of fullness and pain in the abdomen and can further diminish your appetite.

Shannon Marks started her journalism career in 1994. Going from a 2,000-calorie a day diet to a few hundred calories can result in a total weight loss of several pounds. The amount of weight you are at risk of losing as a result of a decreased appetite combined with a lengthy virus depends on your calorie intake. Mononucleosis is an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, one of the most common human viruses. The Mayo Clinic suggests waiting at least one month before returning to vigorous activities, heavy lifting or contact sports. The doctor took a month to even SEE her for her symptoms and she had to go to the emergency room for almost 5 days straight with that rash. The doc checked her thyroid and it was ok. A sore throat, swollen neck glands, fever and weakness in the early stages of the infection can make eating difficult. While symptoms of EBV are indistinguishable from other mild illnesses in children, up to 50 percent of cases lead to mono, the drawn-out, glandular infection. The doc said the weight gain was do to this. The symptoms of mono may not manifest for everyone who contracts the Epstein-Barr virus. And then wind up shooting themselves in the foot.
